The metabolite

All this not only leads to a loss of quality of life, but also to serious deterioration of health, which unfortunately can end in the death of the person. De facto there is evidence that poor muscle mass is linked to cardio-metabolic health, not only in the elderly, but also in middle-aged people, as Scott and colleagues have documented (Scott D, et al. low muscle mass and the metabolic syndrome in Caucasian and Asian middle-aged and older adults, J Nutr Health Aging 2016).

It is interesting to note that the metabolite of leucine, β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), exerts its effects through recognized anticatabolic mechanisms, but it has also been shown to directly influence protein anabolism (Cruz-Jentoft AJ Beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate (https://foodsocietyx.com): From experimental data to clinical evidence in sarcopenia, Curr Protein Pept Sci. 2017), so there is lately a broad framework of research around the HMB that reaches even the attention of individuals with cachexia.
